Looking After Them

Out and about, they are bound to get hurt now and then, or get separated from you. This chapter covers how to revive a pet that has gone down, how to find one that has wandered off, and how to give orders to all of them at once with Whistle Candy.

Going Down and Reviving

A pet that goes down doesn't just disappear. It turns into a doll, and everything in its backpack and all the emeralds it earned are kept in the doll. Nothing is lost.

To bring it back, first place a cake, then right-click the cake while holding the doll. It comes back with all its things and happily says one of its catchphrases.

Putting the doll on a cake

In Survival mode, this is the only way to get a doll. Dolls can't be crafted or bought. So if you have a doll in your inventory, it means one of your pets is waiting for you to bring it home.

Lost Pets and the Pet Bell

The Pet Bell is crafted from gold ingots, emeralds and sticks, and is also sold at the Shop. Right-click to ring it, and all of your pets come back to you, no matter how far away they are, whether they are in unloaded chunks or in another dimension.

If a pet can't be called back, the chat tells you which one. After you ring it, you have to wait half a minute before ringing it again. The bell itself is not used up.

Whistle Candy

Whistle Candy is the fue ramune (フエラムネ) from the original series: a candy with a hole in the middle that you can blow like a whistle, and eat once you've blown it. In the original, Chiikawa found Usagi by a spring that gushed Whistle Candy.

It gives orders to every pet nearby at once:

  • Switching the order. Sneak and right-click with Whistle Candy to switch between Follow, Sit and Free Roam. The item's name shows the current order. Switching doesn't use up the candy.
  • Blowing it. Hold right-click to raise the candy to your mouth and blow. All of your pets within 32 blocks follow the current order: on Follow they run over and follow you, on Sit they sit down where they are, and on Free Roam they scatter to go and play.
  • Wild ones get curious too. When you blow "Follow", wild pets nearby also come over and watch for a while, though this doesn't tame them.

Each blow uses up one candy, even when there are no pets nearby. Craft 4 Whistle Candy from 3 sugar, or buy 4 for 1 emerald at the Shop. Other players' pets, and pets sitting an exam at an Exam Desk, are not affected.

Blow the Whistle Candy and everyone comes running

Whistle Candy only reaches pets nearby. It doesn't work across dimensions, and it can't move the ones in unloaded chunks; to bring back the ones that have wandered off, you still need the bell.

Once you are taking good care of them, you can try something more challenging, like going for The Weeding Licence.
