Work
In the original series, everyone goes to the board each day to take work, and gets paid when it's done. It's the same in this mod. This chapter covers the pets' jobs, the Labor Board, and how they get the work done and the money in hand, step by step.
The Tool Decides the Job
What work a pet does is decided by the tool in its hand. Open its backpack and put the tool in the main hand slot:
| Job | Give it... | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Farmer | A hoe | Harvests and plants nearby crops, pulls up weeds, and picks mushrooms at night |
| Fencer | A sword, or the character's own weapon | Attacks nearby hostile mobs up close |
| Archer | A bow (with arrows in its backpack) | Shoots hostile mobs from a distance |
| Musician | A Music Box (only Hachiware can play) | Plays the songs you put in, see The Music Box |
An empty-handed pet has no job and just wanders around.
The characters' own weapons can be crafted too: Chiikawa's Sasumata from pink wool and sticks, Hachiware's Sasumata from blue wool and sticks, and Usagi's Subjugation Stick from yellow wool, flint and sticks. You'll find them in the recipe book. Rakko's Sword only comes on wild Rakko.
The Labor Board
Craft a Labor Board from paper, planks and sticks, and place it near home. Every day at sunrise, it puts up that day's slips, each a little wooden tag hanging on a hook. When a pet takes one, there is one tag fewer on the board, so you can tell from a distance whether there is still work today.
Right-click the board to see today's slips, which ones have been taken and whose pet took them. The board is shared: on a multiplayer server, every player's pets can come and take slips, and each slip goes to whoever gets there first.

Take a Slip, Work, Get Paid
Taking a slip. A pet on Free Roam goes to a board near home by itself; a following pet only stops by when there is a board within a small circle around you. It picks a slip that matches its job, and takes only one at a time. Wild pets only take what is left.
Working. Once it has a slip, it goes on with its usual job, and the work it does counts towards the slip automatically, so it doesn't have to stay near the board. It still works when it has no slip, just without pay. Open the Status page on its screen to see which slip it has and how far it has got.
Getting paid. The moment it finishes, the pay goes straight into its backpack with a sparkle of emeralds. It hops happily and says one of its catchphrases. If there are still suitable slips that day, it goes to take the next one.
| Slip | Who takes it | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeding | Farmers | Pull up a certain number of weeds |
| Monster Hunting, Monster Shooting | Fencers, Archers | Defeat a certain number of hostile mobs |
| Street Performance | Musicians | Play for a certain length of time |
| Advanced Weeding | Farmers with a grade 3 Weeding Licence or higher | Twice as many weeds, for 2.5 times the pay of normal Weeding |
The pay is mostly emeralds, sometimes with a little something extra. A Farmer who has passed the Weeding Licence gets 1 more emerald per Weeding slip for each grade.

Upgrading the Board
Upgrade the board with emeralds from its screen: 16 for level 2, 32 for level 3. Each level puts up one more slip a day (3 at level 1, 4 at level 2, 5 at level 3). From level 2, it also starts putting up hunting slips and Advanced Weeding slips.
Hunting
Hunting pays the most, but it comes with risk: if a pet goes down while hunting, the slip fails and it gets nothing.
They don't fight recklessly, though. When its health drops to a little over 30%, it falls back to your side first, and goes back once it has healed to 60%, still hitting back as it retreats. A pet with a sword won't go up close to a Creeper (that would be blowing itself up), and Archers shoot it from outside the blast range.
A pet following you protects you too: whatever hits you, targets you or is being hit by you, it goes after. Only a sitting pet stays out of it. And if one goes down, don't worry; see Looking After Them.
Now that they have earned money, how will they spend it? Read on in Emeralds and the Shop.
