Taming

Once you have met a pet you like, you can try to bring it home. This chapter covers how to tame it, and what happens afterwards.

Taming with Food

Right-click a wild pet while holding food. Each feeding has a 30% chance to tame it. Every feeding uses up one piece of food, so bring a few~

The foods you can tame with are bread, cookies, apples, carrots, potatoes, baked potatoes, all kinds of cooked meat and cooked fish, melon slices, sweet berries, glow berries, pumpkin pie, honey bottles, mushroom stew, rabbit stew, and golden apples and golden carrots. Flowers no longer work.

Hearts and a happy line of its own catchphrase mean it worked; a puzzled look means it's not quite there yet, so feed it again.

After Taming

It follows you. A newly tamed pet switches to "Follow" automatically, so you can take it home. For how to give it orders, see Living Together.

Its things are still its own. The tool it held in the wild and the emeralds it saved are still on it after taming, and they still belong to it. Of course, you can take them any time you like with no penalty at all. Whether you do is up to you.

It belongs only to you. On a multiplayer server, other players can't open your pet's backpack or call it away.

Giving It a Name

You can name it with a name tag. Name tags are sold at the Shop, and the name you give it shows up in chat messages, such as what it bought or what gift it brought you.

It's your pet now. Next, take a look at Living Together with it.
