Overview

The numbers and lists you can tune in the Chiikawa Mod, such as where wild pets appear, what slips the Labor Board puts up, what the Shop sells, how hard the Weeding Licence is, and what each character says, are all written in the data pack, with no code to change. This chapter is for modpack authors. It starts with where the data pack goes, how to override it and how to apply your changes, and each page after that covers one kind of file.

Where the Data Pack Goes

Data packs are written the same way as in vanilla; fill in pack.mcmeta for your game version, as described in the Minecraft Wiki's article on data packs. The mod's own files are all under data/chiikawa/. To see what the defaults say, just unzip the mod's jar, copy the file you want out of data/chiikawa/ and edit it.

my_pack/
├── pack.mcmeta
└── data/
    └── chiikawa/
├── pet_task/weeding.json same name, replaces the mod's own
└── tags/item/currency.json a tag, can add to it or replace it entirely

In 1.21, vanilla changed some directory names to the singular. In 1.20.6 and earlier they are tags/items, tags/blocks, tags/entity_types and loot_tables; from 1.21 on they are tags/item, tags/block, tags/entity_type and loot_table. The mod's own directories, such as pet_task and shop_catalog, are the same in every version.

How to Override

The override rules are the same as in vanilla:

  • A file with the same path replaces the mod's own copy entirely.
  • A new file under your own namespace, such as data/my_pack/pet_task/mushroom_picking.json, adds a new entry. This suits directories that already hold several files, like slips and little scenes.
  • Tags merge by the vanilla rules: "replace": false adds to the tag, and true replaces it entirely.

Applying Your Changes

Run /reload after editing and the changes take effect; only wild pet spawning needs you to rejoin the world. A file with mistakes is skipped, and the log says which file it is and what is wrong, while everything else keeps working. These files are all read by the server, so on a multiplayer server you only need to install the data pack on the server.

Durations in the files are all in ticks: 20 ticks is 1 second, and a game day is 24000 ticks.
